Do you cut a great shape ladies? Well apparently we do!! That’s what a lovely gentlemen assisting us checking our bags in recently said to Miss Kim and I.. The nicest compliment I think we have ever received. I had not heard that term used before and then not only did I hear it first hand I immediately read in “Edith Head’s Hollywood” Her Biography that I was reading on the plane.. Bizaar! Edith Head was Head Designer & Costumer to all of the stars for nearly 60 years. Her story is filled with Hollywood gossip, great fashion advice, tricks of the trade and an insight into the brilliance of some of the best frocks & gowns of the 20th century. Since I last wrote we have been quite busy with one fabulous event after another. We had the Garterbelts and Gasoline Festival where I live on Tamborine Mountain in QLD. Our humble abode was home to some of the bands and Melbourne friends who had braved the weekend. Boy was it fun!! Amongst other things strong friendships with likeminded people were formed, fabulous frocks were worn, Tiaras were dusted off in honour of the Royal Wedding, A fair share of Pims and plenty of cocktails were consumed... Oh yes, and there was a spot of late night Jamming/Karaoke at 5am in the morning as well.... It’s what happens when our Margaritas run out of Margarita Mix and only leaves Tequila!! A highlight for me this weekend was the Vintage High Tea Tour that I hosted... 25 beautifully frocked ladies & a few dapper gents joined me on the ole Tamborine Trolleys (A bit like the trams in San Francisco but with wheels) and we went started at Felicities on the Mountain for High Tea and then vintage Shopped til we dropped... I picked up this amazing outfit on this trip for only $60!!! (I’m the Blonde on the left!). Maryanne from Esme and the Laneway was our beautiful Young Elizabeth Taylor Model at the Melbourne Love Vintage Fair.
Next was our Virtual Makeover and full workshop at the Mannequin Exhibition at Como House which is still on by the way.. Worth a visit if you are in Melbourne.
On to the First Love Vintage Fair in Melbourne at the Showgrounds. Wow, what a great turn out. Melbourne put on its best weather.. cold and raining which drove everyone inside.. Win win. The Fashion Parades, Best Dressed and of course our very own Vintage Hairstyling Salon were all a hit. Janel and her family have done such a great job so it is with sadness that I learn they have sold the fairs on to another company so they it can grow. We will absolutely miss her,Peter and Mum and Dad and of course sister Erica but understand that if you love something and you want it to grow then sometimes you have to let it go and that is what Janel has done. I know the new company (to be released soon) will take this fair to new heights so hop on board and experience these fairs which will be taking Australia by storm and coming to your town very soon. They are a treasure trove and eye candy for people like you and I....
And then we headed off to Wintersun Port Macquarie and if you have facebook then pop on over and like Wintersun Festival and you will see all the fun we had. All I can say is 7 days 14 outfits, too many bands to take in, average of 4 hours sleep per night and killer dances oh not to mention the shopping, cake bake competition and Fashion Parade and then there was the Pretty Things Peep Show. Surprisingly though, even after Canadian Pancakes for breakfast every day and cocktails every night I did not put on any holiday weight!! Can’t complain about that.
The last two years of Charm School travel did certainly prepare me for packing 14 complete outfits and I’m talking hats, shoes, gloves, jewellery and shoes to all match in some cases and still I had less than Master Keepence who could not seem to decide what to wear so took everything and then only wore a fraction.. Such a girl thing normally ha ha... The trick was this year I carefully folded then rolled each dress quite tightly and packed and managed to put ALL frocks in one small case (I’m talking carry on luggage size) then made one pair of shoes do two outfits so that limited shoes to 7 and had two hats to cover all, one pair of gloves in black did the trick and 4 sets of jewellery.. My 5 pair of sunglasses may have been over the top though. My Hat box took both hats, all sunglasses, gloves and jewellery so there I one carry on case, 1 hat box and a tote bag of shoes.. It was a bit like mary poppins at the other end as 14 frocks came out of one bag and I hung them around the room... Master K could not believe it...
I decided (boldly) that I was going over the top glamorous this year and below is my favourite original 1940’s floor length gown that was just to die for and yes I danced quite successfully in it. Best fun....Ladies, don’t be afraid to go over the top now and then and stand tall and walk proud... scary at first but in the end Glamour wins everytime and no-one can say a bad thing about you or what your wearing as long as it is done right..... Well that’s how I see it... I recommend you all look at joining us next year for the 25th Anniversary of Wintersun in Coffs Harbour where Master K will be celebrating a milestone Birthday and you can bet there will be a Soiree to end all Soiree’s....mmm what to wear???
So now it is on to Melbourne for workshop 16 July with a wonderful Exclusive Shopping Experience at the Vintage Garage then Greazefest will be upon us and then on to Canberra for the “Canberrang” Swing Festival where we will be starting our One on One Private Critique classes... This is indeed exciting news for us as it is something we have wanted to progress to for a long time but have not had the time and now we do...
These one on one private time will be offered these before or after each workshop. This will be a 1 hour one on one with either Miss Kim or myself or both whereby you can bring your own selection of outfits along and we will guide you on what suits and what doesn’t, we will give you hairstyle options suitable for your face & overall look, we will help perfect the right makeup look for you to again suit for face, shape and overall look.... we will guide you to arrive at YOUR own vintage look....

The Powered Starch was your face power and the beetroot was your color for cheeks, lips as well as nails...England was hit hardest with rationing and shampoo became almost non-existent and with only 1 bar of soap per month, the task of washing ones hair became difficult.. One way they use to do this was putting your head over a steaming bowl of hot water while vigorously rubbing your hair with a towel to rid it of built up grease and grime then rinsing in toilet water (watered down parfum) to scent the hair...

Just wanted to extend my thanks for the lovely experience on Sunday at Charm School. You were right, we could have done a full day with so much to learn and talk about. I had a lovely time and wanted to thank you both for putting it on. I feel if it was extended for say and extra hour and perhaps tea, coffee and little cupcakes etc were served after that, people wouldnt mind paying $100 -$120 for that, then at the end of the class while your fixing up peoples hair, they can all have a tea party and watch. (just a little thought)I loved the day, and am looking forward to your next one when you bring it to Brisbane, Ill be sure to bring my friends. TAMMY
I've spent the weekend here on my own (friends all bailed on me.... AWKWARD!), so I appreciated the friendly mood you created-broke the ice for talking with the people around you. It was a good mix of information & hands on- i've done a bit on presentation skills & different learning types, so I know it's important to vary the content & delivery so everyone has a chance to get things to 'click'.......I found the workshop a great step in that direction. Unlike self help books or friends patting you on the back (or chocolate), the workshop was empowering in a sense that it gave me tools & focus on me & who I want to be. KATE
I just wanted to thank you on behalf of myself and my friends that came along to the Lindy Charm School Sunday afternoon. We had a ball and learnt so much. The history was just as enthralling as the practical. We will endeavour to practice until we get it right. ANNA
