Weekend Notes by Kaylene Stragalas

Would you like to learn the secret to recreating that vintage look of the 30's, 40's or 50's? The Lindy Charm School for Girls will show you how.

Mistress Chrissy

Gather some friends and spend a fun afternoon as Mistress Chrissy guides you in recreating the glamour look of yesterday. Some of the tips and tricks you'll learn are:

• how to get that perfect pout
• the art of applying eyeliner
• how to set and make a pin curl
• girdles and why they are a girls' best friend
• what the heck is a Doo Rag and how to tie one.

I recently attended The Lindy School of Charm for Girls event in Melbourne.

I had a great time applying makeup, setting my hair and hearing stories of how women during the depression and the war years squeezed every ounce of glamour they could out of life. Times were dangerous and life precarious, they didn't want to waste one moment.

Did you know that, for as many as 20 years in some countries, rationing was a way of life? Can you imagine being allowed only two pairs of underwear, two pairs of stockings and one dress for a whole YEAR?

No choice. There were none to buy.

Make do and mend was the motto of the day. And these women were geniuses at making do.

Now today, the 30's 40's and 50's look is a growing fashion trend for women (and men) of all ages.

At the Lindy Charm School for Girls we had a lot of fun swapping stories on where to buy vintage clothing and got all the gossip on girdles.

We received help a plenty, with lots of hands on demonstrations.
Mistress Chrissy and her dedicated helpers went around the room to make sure everyone looked good.

Hands on demonstration

And look good we did.

My favourite look for the day was the sassy, hip, 40's chick with the wing tipped sunnies and bobbed fringe. This was teamed with a pink and white polka dot doo rag tied around the head and bright red lipstick. Attitude plus.

Then there was the girl with the lilac coloured pin curls. With her head held high, she left with her fringe bobbed and two stunning, large pin curls rolled onto the top of her head. She looked absolutely AMAZING.

And strangely enough she also looked very modern.

The Lindy Charm School for Girls makes for a fun get together and would also be perfect for hens' parties and work socials.

Treat yourself to some old fashioned glamour; email or call Mistress Chrissy and leave the stresses of today behind.
