From the Desk of Miss Chrissy - Melbourne Cup Preperations

From the Desk of Miss Chrissy

Do you cut a great shape ladies?   This is something to keep in mind when you are preparing your outfit for the races.  The hat, the shoulders, the waist, the hips, the knees and yes even the ankles must all be working together to create the best silhouette for you.  Did you know that the “perfect hourglass figure” is actually when the waist is 10 INCHES smaller that the bust and the hips?  It’s not about being 36-24-36 -it could be any number, just like our age, as long as it is in proportion.    If your outfit is put together properly, starting with the correct foundation garments which actually help to create that shape, then you are flying out of the starting gates!

In addition to your outer beauty as exemplified by your attire, hair & make up, you must now work on your inner beauty. This needs to shine forth, reflected in your charm, your enjoyment , your conduct and etiquette. Lets now explore some do’s and don’ts enabling you to put your best, elegantly shod foot forward and charm that inner racing circle..
.

Quotes from The British School of Conduct for Racing
“The racecourse creates its own 'social micro-climate', characterised by a highly unusual combination of relaxed inhibitions and exceptional good manners”

“The Code of Chivalry: Behaviour towards women, in all enclosures, follows an unwritten code of old-fashioned chivalry. At the races, all women are treated as 'ladies'. This code does not prevent racegoers from engaging in mate-selection, courtship and seduction rituals, but it does ensure that females feel safe, protected and respected”

The Rules of Etiquette, The Art of Decorum and Never failing to observe the Proprieties:
Here are just a few of the important tips to abide by on race day:

·         Do be well prepared, relaxed, elegant, graceful, feminine & gracious at all times
·         Do always stand and don't talk during the National Anthem
·         Do always talk politely & maintain eye contact with the person with whom you are conversing
·         Do include gel pads in shoes for tired feet – as wearing shoes on wrists is unacceptable
·         Do carry a handkerchief in your purse as well as a compact, make up touch up kit. Dry flaky lipstick and a sweaty forehead are unattractive
·         Do carry a handy perfume to stay fragrant throughout day
·         Do carry double sided tape for strapless / low cut dresses, wayward straps & hats
·         Do accept and offer a compliment with genuine grace – They say, “A genuine compliment will suffuse the recipient with positive feelings, and oils the wheels of social intercourse”
·         Don’t swear or cuss or be overly loud, even if your sure fire winner fails to finish
·         Don’t drink your beverage from a can or bottle, rather hold your champagne or cocktail glass by stem not the bowl
·         Don’t sit or stand inappropriately so as to expose your undergarments
·         Don’t get so intoxicated that you need lean on someone or something, this is not how a lady rests:

And, finally, if you're somebody's guest, remember your manners and don't forget that all-important thank you letter afterwards.

Charm is something unique and personal to you as an individual. At The Lindy Charm School, we teach all of our students traditional & modern tips and techniques to enhance their natural beauty through great presentation, poise and etiquette. It is not about having the biggest personality that overshadows everybody else nor is it about being the funniest, smartest or most knowledgeable person. It embodies many qualities – warmth, wit, the ability to converse with others, enthusiasm, empathy, affability, ease, & style. It is certainly not formulaic. I think the most important thing to remember is to be yourself at all times – remember no-body is better qualified. Once you become entirely comfortable within your own skin, you become comfortable with everyone around you & everything else falls into place. Have a great day’s racing & remember-   these tips will produce a winner every time!

Til then,

Kisses from the Mistress xx

Weekend Notes by Kaylene Stragalas

Would you like to learn the secret to recreating that vintage look of the 30's, 40's or 50's? The Lindy Charm School for Girls will show you how.

Mistress Chrissy

Gather some friends and spend a fun afternoon as Mistress Chrissy guides you in recreating the glamour look of yesterday. Some of the tips and tricks you'll learn are:

• how to get that perfect pout
• the art of applying eyeliner
• how to set and make a pin curl
• girdles and why they are a girls' best friend
• what the heck is a Doo Rag and how to tie one.

I recently attended The Lindy School of Charm for Girls event in Melbourne.

I had a great time applying makeup, setting my hair and hearing stories of how women during the depression and the war years squeezed every ounce of glamour they could out of life. Times were dangerous and life precarious, they didn't want to waste one moment.

Did you know that, for as many as 20 years in some countries, rationing was a way of life? Can you imagine being allowed only two pairs of underwear, two pairs of stockings and one dress for a whole YEAR?

No choice. There were none to buy.

Make do and mend was the motto of the day. And these women were geniuses at making do.

Now today, the 30's 40's and 50's look is a growing fashion trend for women (and men) of all ages.

At the Lindy Charm School for Girls we had a lot of fun swapping stories on where to buy vintage clothing and got all the gossip on girdles.

We received help a plenty, with lots of hands on demonstrations.
Mistress Chrissy and her dedicated helpers went around the room to make sure everyone looked good.

Hands on demonstration

And look good we did.

My favourite look for the day was the sassy, hip, 40's chick with the wing tipped sunnies and bobbed fringe. This was teamed with a pink and white polka dot doo rag tied around the head and bright red lipstick. Attitude plus.

Then there was the girl with the lilac coloured pin curls. With her head held high, she left with her fringe bobbed and two stunning, large pin curls rolled onto the top of her head. She looked absolutely AMAZING.

And strangely enough she also looked very modern.

The Lindy Charm School for Girls makes for a fun get together and would also be perfect for hens' parties and work socials.

Treat yourself to some old fashioned glamour; email or call Mistress Chrissy and leave the stresses of today behind.

Ah, Love Vintage… why are you over until March next year? I’m in withdrawal.

Glam 1930s-era hairpiece from Circa Vintage Hats

Last weekend’s event was by far the biggest and most buzziest I’ve been to in some time. Perhaps it’s because vintage is so hot right now (need evidence, Mugatu… if the Tele says so it must be true). Or perhaps it’s because all the workshops and talks – which I adored, by the way, and thanks to the scores of lovely people who attended mine – were just brimming with enthusiasm and admiration for such high-quality pieces from yesteryear. Indeed you could barely hear yourself think above the chatter, tip-sharing and general gasps when gowns fit like the proverbial glove. It was every vintage vixen’s dream.

From the Desk Miss Kelley Mc - "On Getting Naked"

In August Miss Chrissy introduced us to her Life Coach, Tamra Mercieca. After a Lindy Charm school for Girls workshop earlier this year, Tamra gave me the honour of inviting me to her Very Special Evening.  In keeping with all things fabulous, this was not a mere ‘book launch’. No, instead it was “The Getting Naked Festival”. In a beautiful gown from Bonnie Rose Vintage Clothing (www.bonnierosevintage.com.au/) , Tamra cut the figure of a perfect hostess, chatting to guests and enjoying an evening which had been put together with much thought and care. As well as the opportunity to get our hands on the Getting Naked book, we were treated to raw/organic/no sugar/delicious chocolate, natural beauty and cleaning products (a true treat for the olfactory sense), the beautiful music of Heidi Hibberd (www.myspace.com/heidihibberd) and my new favourite florist in Melbourne – Floriography (http://www.facebook.com/floriography.com.au). The Victorians (from the era not the state!) used various flowers that had specific meanings as a way of speaking in code to each other. When people dated in secret, they could convey messages to each other through their tussie-mussies.  Bring this tradition back I say! And it would be remiss of me not to mention that all of Tamra’s Getting Naked girls looked fantastic, with their vintage finishing touches applied by Candice De Ville and Helen McLean (http://www.somefancyladies.com/). I am looking forward to the photos!  While there were a range of excellent companies involved in the night who all deserve credit, the above is intended to give a flavour of the evening.

And what of the book/CD itself I hear you ask…  allow me to borrow from the author herself:

A new toolkit designed to help you fashion a healthy and loving relationship with your most fabulous self. This boutique of hypnosis, metaphor therapy and visualisation can be used alone or alongside the 'Remarkable Relationships' seminar to help make changes from an unconscious level, so you are able to stitch up the results you want in ALL areas of your life. The more you listen to these tracks the more control you will have over your emotions and behaviours, so you can radiate the inner beauty that lies within us all.

And Tamra certainly did radiate her inner beauty, being a living example of her book’s message. Bravo to you Tamra!

Quote of the Month:
be like the bird,  that pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight
feels them give way beneath her yet sings, knowing she hath wings

From the Desk of Ms Chrissy

Spring is here and it’s time to pack away all the winters and freshen up all the summers.. yes?  Well that is what I have been doing amongst all the sneezing of course!!  I have cleaned out the wardrobes, packed the furs and rearranged  the shoe cupboard.  Currently I am  airing out some of my finest summer vintage in preparation for the warmer months ahead.  ..  While I was at it, I did take the advice of Ms Dita Von Teese and threw out all my “smalls” that were a bit tatty and have made a list of new undergarments I need to buy....  This exercise alone was quite refreshing so I highly recommend it.  All bras and panties that did not cut it were literally thrown...

The Lindy Charm School for Girls is also going through a bit of a spring clean as well of sorts, assessing current structures and planning new things is what it is all about.  Having had a fantastic past couple of years growing at a steady pace I have decided to invest more time and energy into strengthening, growing and diversifying into 2012.   With a new team on board and ideas overflowing on how we can reach and touch and spread our message further I feel invigorated by the possibilities.  Watch this space is all I can say as 2012 is going to be big, I can feel it....
On another note we bid Miss Kim Farewell.  Kim has decided to leave the Lindy Charm School for Girls and pursue who own ambitions and we thank her for the past 3 years in which she was a valuable member of the team at workshops but also behind the scenes.  Thanks Kim and Good Luck.
I also need to advise that I won’t be going on the LA Vintage Tour in April next year and although this was originally a Lindy Charm School for Girls marketed event, Kim has done all the work behind the scenes and it is essentially her baby.  If you have booked to go on the tour with the expectation that I would be attending, then I apologise if I have disappointed but, I do believe Kim is offering your deposits back should you wish to withdraw.  I think it will be a fabulous tour and am certain that good times will be had by all joining Kim.
Also while cleaning out a few things I came across and interview I did with the amazing Candice Deville of Super Kawaii Mama Fame and re-read it and asked myself if asked the same questions would I answer the same way and I came up with a definite yes.  Here’s what I had to say and Ladies, on the back of a wonderful workshop on the weekend I wanted to you all to hear this and once again be reminded of your worth, your value and your amazingness if that’s even a word!
I said:   value yourself and feel worthy enough to be beautiful inside and out.  A great quote I read once “Before she allows the world to judge her face, a woman is entitled to create it! – That goes for the whole package in my eyes.  We can’t avoid the judgments, stares & comments from others but we can stand tall with confidence if our intention for attention is not one of borne out of competition, malice or arrogance; but rather to feel good about oneself, then what’s the problem? We have a right to embrace ourselves and if wearing red lipstick defines me out in the image world, then who has the right to judge that. It’s personal choice.  If you haven’t got anything good to say about someone then don’t say anything. If I see an amazingly beautiful women dressed to the nines then I compliment her, I also note her appearance and take tips to better my own!  We all should take more pride in ourselves as we do our homes, our cars our gardens and everything else material. These days, we “pimp” almost everything, even our phones have bling, why not ourselves! As flowers brighten the world, so do women.
One thing I have learned through doing the Lindy Charm School for Girls is to refine my most comfortable, yet individual, look and get it down pat in 10 minutes flat given I’ve always had to juggle (like almost all women)  either single parenthood with the usual morning activities, careers, relationships, housework. Then later in a marriage and blended family, with even more kids,  I always found that at the very least with some lippy and a flower in the hair, it would always brighten even the most trying of days. It is essential to me.

Til then Ladies,
xx Ms Chrissy xx

            A BIT OF HAIRSPRAY TRIVIA.
The actual hairspray can was not invented until 1943 during World War II, when aerosol sprays were used to kill insects. After the war, the beauty industry recognized the "power" of the aerosol containers, which were pressurized by a fluorocarbon, or liquefied gas. In 1950, Helene Curtis became the first to use the generic term "hairspray" for its newly developed aerosol product called Spray Net. By 1955, the company was selling it across the world.

The Lindy Charm School for Girls uses their own brand of Essential Setting Lotion (an original formula) which negates the use of heavy  use of  hairspray or lacquer allowing us to only have to use a fine mist of our favorite hairspray “Cedel” hairspray.  Purchase the Essential Setting Lotion from us and get your can of Cedel in the Pink can from almost any supermarket for about $4.50.

From our dear friends “The Darling Sisters”
Charming friends,
We can't resist having a separate category for our gorgeous friends the ladies of the Lindy Charm School for Girls.
Mistress Chrissy and her glamorous Charm School teachers are every kind of lovely and we adore their efforts to bring a little vintage glamour into every Australian lady's life. The Lindy Charm School is based in sunny Queensland, but thanks be to heaven, they are willing to travel around Australia. We hope very much to see them in Canberra again soon. We'd love to get together to play!
The Lindy Charm School for Girls teaches lucky ladies the arts of vintage-style glamour, including how to get those glorious hairstyles of the early 20th century just right.
We have both attended the Lindy Charm School and felt that we learned a great deal. It was fun, fun, fun. Full of laughs and life lessons, very cosy and very glam. We can't recommend them highly enough. We know that the Lindy Charm girls are very popular with swing dancers but you don't have to be a dancer to get a lot out of the experience.
