Quote of the Month:
Nature has made women with a bosom, so nature thought it was important.
Who am I to argue with nature?
Ida Rosenthal, inventor of the modern brassiere.
She figured out how to gently lift and separate the women from the girls.

Tis the Season to be Jolly, and Jolly I am.... So much to be thankful for as 2011 comes to an end.. I give thanks daily for the wonderful and inspirational people I have met this year, I’m talking about you Ladies..... The laughs, the tears and yes the tantrums are all part of the history of us..
Some highlights for this year for me have definitely been my involvement in the Love Vintage Fairs around Australia... I am so excited to have been part of this fair from (well almost) its beginning to now witnessing its growth along the way has been really amazing. It is set to get bigger so get on board and enjoy what this wonderful Love Vintage Community has to offer... (Links below)
Another highlight has also been my increasing involvement with the many wonderful festivals we have here in Australia such as The Wintersun Festival, Garterbelts and Gasoline, Greazefest to name a few, with my love of Vintage Styling , Music & Dancing, we have been spoilt for super events to enjoy as well as represent. Fashion Parades, High Teas, Shopping Tours, Cake Bakes, Pin Up Booths, and all the other glamorous side shows that come with it are the cherry on top..(Links to all below)

Yes that’s you Candice, Bonnie, Nicole, Helen, Kesenya, Nada... all successful and valuable contributors to this wonderful community we are growing but also, all round nice ladies to boot...
So many firsts this year, so many milestones but probably the biggest to date would be........ Drum Role (a small self indulgent pat on the back moment) .... I am humbled and thrilled to announce that I am now the Vintage Styling Editor of a new National Magazine being launched in March called Love Vintage Magazine. A first for our industry and this is going to be huge. Nervous and excited all at the same time. They are offering a special early subscription discount to LCS so make sure you subscribe ASAP. Check my website or email me for further details.
There has been no shortage of sad moments as well but we won’t dwell on those, only to say that if you are hurting I send you comfort and when I am hurting I feel your comfort.
So at 1am I must be off to bed as dark circles are quite unbecoming ..must remember to take the Green Tea Bags with me tomorrow in case I need a little antioxidant pick me up.. (Place them over your eyes for 10 mins to calm the bags and reduce the darkness)....
Merry Christmas, be safe, be kind to one another and remember to spend a few moments each and every day on yourselves...
Til then Ladies,

From the Desk of Miss Sammy
There was something very special and beautiful about women in the early- to mid-20th century. The way they dressed was elegant and the way they wore their hair was feminine.
1940's women were asked to do a lot, and working for the war effort took a toll. But glamour was in, fresh from Hollywood, and women who were earning their first pay checks were also shopping, dressing elegantly and using cosmetics like movie stars. Part of the rationale was that the nation's women couldn't afford to look frumpy in a time of war; the other reason for spending so much time and effort on one's appearance was to stay somewhat positive and optimistic. "Putting a brave face on" was more than an interior process: wearing makeup and nice clothes was a statement of self-worth and confidence. Striking, classy, and beautiful are words that define the 1940s makeup. They strived to look beautiful and feminine despite the prevalence of simple utility clothing. Makeup was one way a woman could accent her look, even in a factory uniform.
The makeup of the 40s was influenced by a variety of factors. World War II dominated the time period, and although war production helped pull America out of the great depression, people were not wasteful. Makeup, although socially acceptable in this decade, reflected this sentiment. The style was based on natural beauty; simple and subdued, yet striking in nature.
The style of makeup in the 1940s relied on flawless-looking skin, long lashes, groomed but natural-looking brows, and striking lips. Red lipstick is a defining makeup look from this period. A woman's makeup was not complete without a beautiful red lip. Many shades of red were available, from lighter orange-reds to darker cherry and brick reds. The lighter more natural shades could be worn for day, and a darker lip colour worn for evening glamour. Lip liner was also essential. The look called for a soft, full, slightly rounded lip, and women often exaggerated the upper lip to get the desired effect. The 1940s makeup colours and style appeal to many women. This is an especially popular look for special occasions, such as weddings or formal dances, because while it is very sophisticated, it also allows a woman's natural beauty to shine. If you are considering a modern, 40s-inspired vibe, consider these tips: The classic sophistication of 1940s makeup is one that can be emulated with a little practice. Whether you want an exaggerated makeup style from this time period for a costume party, or simply want to rock the glamorous style inspired by this era, focusing on defined but natural-looking women.
Roles changed drastically in the 1940s. As men went to war, women went to work. The makeup trends at the time were simple, uncomplicated and only took a few moments to apply.
Movie stars of the 1940s were glamorous and alluring, with makeup that focused on lovely lips and eyelashes. Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Ingrid Bergman are classic examples of a look that was alluring, but not colourful or overdone.
If you want to become one of those glamour 1940s girls, then watch out for our special make up workshops in 2012.
Hope you all enjoy a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year.
I am looking forward to being inspired by you all next year.

Here is what some of our recent débutantes and hen party ladies have to say:
This email is sincerely sent with much love and gratitude as the past couple of years have been difficult for me given having to undergo surgeries and rehab, which left me with very little confidence especially with the way I look. But having been at your workshop and having learnt tricks and tips from you beautiful ladies, my confidence is coming back - THANK YOU xxxxx Natali
I had a fantastic time. Thank you for imparting your knowledge on the subject of style, I learnt so much and have been practicing my pin curls and victory rolls since then. Although at my work I have to wear a drab black hat to cover my hair (I am a chocolatier), every day before I leave the house I ensure that I am wearing red lipstick. Just like the oath said. Emily
Thank you Chrissy and team for transforming us into perfect retro ladies! Everyone looked gorgeous and the photos taken from the day were amazing - such a wonderful keepsake to have of my girlfriends :) Definitely something uniquely special for a hen's day - we all had a blast getting into the 50's theme. Will never appear in public without red lipstick again! Gloria
Just writing to let you know what a WONDERFUL time i had at the workshop on Saturday. It was very interesting learning the history of what Australian women did to always look her best! I have learned some very helpful new tips to create my style and add to my own quirky gothic style. I received many compliments on my way home on the bus and it made me feel really good about myself. Once again thank you very much to you and the other girls that made the experience something I will never forget. Katie
Your workshop was my first which I hope / plan to be many. I have had so many many comments regarding my ‘Marilyn Monroe’ hair, I certainly have experienced Miss Chrissy’s comments of today about getting lots of looks and compliments. I have mastered the ‘thankyou’ when not knowing what to say. The three of you have all given me a new boast of confidence, so I thank you from the deepest part of my heart. Kim

About Chrissy and The Lindy Charm School for Girls:
The fabulous Chrissy Keepence founded The Lindy Charm School for Girls in 2006 as there were precious few opportunities left for modern girls to learn traditional beauty techniques.
The Lindy Charm School is passionate about reviving the glitz and glamour of the 20's to the 60's - keeping the traditions of our foremothers alive by introducing girls to red lipstick, pin curls, victory rolls, finger waves, bullet bras, girdles, garters, seamed nylons, sky-high heels and how to wear them with a wiggly walk to boot.
Workshops are held around the country and will teach you how to create hairstyles from the 20's to the 60's using traditional & modern methods in addition to how to apply make-up to give a classic, beautiful finish. Sign up to the Lindy Charm School newsletter for more info on 2012 workshops and events coming up soon.
Matchbox is located near Woolworths.

Quote of the Month:
be like the bird,
that pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight
feels them give way beneath her
yet sings,
knowing she hath wings
From the Desk of Ms Chrissy
Spring is here and it’s time to pack away all the
winters and freshen up all the summers.. yes?
Well that is what I have been doing amongst all the sneezing of
course!! I have cleaned out the
wardrobes, packed the furs and rearranged
the shoe cupboard. Currently I
am airing out some of my finest summer
vintage in preparation for the warmer months ahead. ..
While I was at it, I did take the advice of Ms Dita Von Teese and threw
out all my “smalls” that were a bit tatty and have made a list of new undergarments
I need to buy.... This exercise alone
was quite refreshing so I highly recommend it.
All bras and panties that did not cut it were literally thrown...
The Lindy Charm School for Girls is also going
through a bit of a spring clean as well of sorts, assessing current structures
and planning new things is what it is all about. Having had a fantastic past couple of years
growing at a steady pace I have decided to invest more time and energy into
strengthening, growing and diversifying into 2012. With a new team on board and ideas
overflowing on how we can reach and touch and spread our message further I feel
invigorated by the possibilities. Watch
this space is all I can say as 2012 is going to be big, I can feel it....
On another note we bid Miss Kim Farewell. Kim has decided to leave the Lindy Charm
School for Girls and pursue who own ambitions and we thank her for the past 3
years in which she was a valuable member of the team at workshops but also
behind the scenes. Thanks Kim and Good
Luck.
I also need to advise that I won’t be going on the
LA Vintage Tour in April next year and although this was originally a Lindy
Charm School for Girls marketed event, Kim has done all the work behind the
scenes and it is essentially her baby.
If you have booked to go on the tour with the expectation that I would
be attending, then I apologise if I have disappointed but, I do believe Kim is
offering your deposits back should you wish to withdraw. I think it will be a fabulous tour and am
certain that good times will be had by all joining Kim.
Also
while cleaning out a few things I came across and interview I did with the
amazing Candice Deville of Super Kawaii Mama Fame and re-read it and asked
myself if asked the same questions would I answer the same way and I came up
with a definite yes. Here’s what I had
to say and Ladies, on the back of a wonderful workshop on the weekend I wanted
to you all to hear this and once again be reminded of your worth, your value
and your amazingness if that’s even a word!
I said: value yourself and feel
worthy enough to be beautiful inside and out. A great quote I read once
“Before she allows the world to judge her face, a woman is entitled to create
it! – That goes for the whole package in my eyes. We can’t avoid the judgments,
stares & comments from others but we can stand tall with confidence if our
intention for attention is not one of borne out of competition, malice or
arrogance; but rather to feel good about oneself, then what’s the problem? We
have a right to embrace ourselves and if wearing red lipstick defines me out in
the image world, then who has the right to judge that. It’s personal
choice. If you haven’t got anything good to say about someone then don’t
say anything. If I see an amazingly beautiful women dressed to the nines then I
compliment her, I also note her appearance and take tips to better my own!
We all should take more pride in ourselves as we do our homes, our cars
our gardens and everything else material. These days, we “pimp” almost everything,
even our phones have bling, why not ourselves! As flowers brighten the world,
so do women.
One thing I have learned through doing the Lindy Charm School for Girls
is to refine my most comfortable, yet individual, look and get it down pat in
10 minutes flat given I’ve always had to juggle (like almost all women)
either single parenthood with the usual morning activities, careers,
relationships, housework. Then later in a marriage and blended family, with
even more kids, I always found that at the very least with some lippy and
a flower in the hair, it would always brighten even the most trying of days. It
is essential to me.

A BIT OF
HAIRSPRAY TRIVIA.
The actual hairspray can was not invented until 1943 during World War II, when aerosol sprays were used to kill insects. After the war, the beauty industry recognized the "power" of the aerosol containers, which were pressurized by a fluorocarbon, or liquefied gas. In 1950, Helene Curtis became the first to use the generic term "hairspray" for its newly developed aerosol product called Spray Net. By 1955, the company was selling it across the world.

The Lindy Charm School for Girls uses their own brand of Essential Setting Lotion (an original formula) which negates the use of heavy use of hairspray or lacquer allowing us to only have to use a fine mist of our favorite hairspray “Cedel” hairspray. Purchase the Essential Setting Lotion from us and get your can of Cedel in the Pink can from almost any supermarket for about $4.50.

From
our dear friends “The Darling Sisters”Charming friends,
We can't resist having a separate category for our gorgeous friends the ladies of the Lindy Charm School for Girls.
Mistress Chrissy and her glamorous Charm School teachers are every kind of lovely and we adore their efforts to bring a little vintage glamour into every Australian lady's life. The Lindy Charm School is based in sunny Queensland, but thanks be to heaven, they are willing to travel around Australia. We hope very much to see them in Canberra again soon. We'd love to get together to play!
The Lindy Charm School for Girls teaches lucky ladies the arts of vintage-style glamour, including how to get those glorious hairstyles of the early 20th century just right.
We have both attended the Lindy Charm School and felt that we learned a great deal. It was fun, fun, fun. Full of laughs and life lessons, very cosy and very glam. We can't recommend them highly enough. We know that the Lindy Charm girls are very popular with swing dancers but you don't have to be a dancer to get a lot out of the experience.
